How you act, what you pursue, and how you handle conflict

Mars in your birth chart is your energy, will, way of pursuing goals and reaction to conflict. We break down what it shows.

Mars is the planet of action. It governs how you move towards a goal, how you respond to obstacles — and what makes you angry. Anger is often considered a negative emotion, but in astrology Mars is simply your life force.

What Mars shows

Mars governs will, initiative, physical energy and sexuality. The sign of Mars shows your action style: how you pursue goals, what energises you, and how you react when things go off plan.

The house of Mars is the area of life where you are most active, where you most want to achieve something. The aspects of Mars show how easily or how hard it is for you to realise your desires.

Mars and anger

Mars in Aries gets angry quickly and moves on just as quickly — a flash, then forgotten. Mars in Taurus gets angry slowly, but then very deeply — and for a long time. Mars in Scorpio gets angry quietly and internally, storing grievances. Mars in Libra dislikes direct anger and prefers passive aggression.

Understanding your Mars helps you stop fighting your own reactions and work with them consciously. If you know you have Mars in Taurus, you understand why you need time to calm down — and why 'answer me right now' only makes things worse.

Mars and sexuality

In synastry (the comparison of two charts), one partner's Mars and the other's Venus is one of the key axes — the axis of attraction. If your Mars conjuncts your partner's Venus, there is chemistry. If both Mars placements are in a square, there is passion and conflict simultaneously.

Mars also shows the type of physical activity that suits you. Mars in Aries — adrenaline sports. Mars in Capricorn — endurance and discipline. Mars in Pisces — swimming, yoga, something meditative.
