Synastry is the branch of astrology concerned with relationships — specifically, with what happens when two birth charts interact with each other. Rather than looking at one person's chart in isolation, a synastry reading overlays two charts and examines how the planets of one person relate to the planets of another. The result is a detailed map of the connection between two people.
What Does a Synastry Reading Actually Reveal?
A synastry analysis examines the planetary contacts between two charts — called inter-aspects — and interprets what each of them means for the relationship. Some contacts describe strong attraction; others describe friction, power struggles, or deep karmic resonance.
A reading can reveal what draws two people to each other and why the attraction feels so compelling, where tension and misunderstanding tend to arise in the relationship and what drives them, what each person brings to the dynamic and what they need from the other, karmic or long-standing themes that tie two people together, and the overall nature of the relationship — whether it tends toward depth, growth, challenge, or ease.
What Elements Are Analysed in a Synastry Reading?
The core of a synastry reading is the inter-aspects — the angles formed between the planets of Chart A and the planets of Chart B. A conjunction (0°) between two planets creates an intense fusion of their energies. An opposition (180°) creates polarity and tension that can either be very dynamic or deeply frustrating. A trine (120°) creates harmony and ease. A square (90°) generates friction that can drive growth — or conflict.
Particularly significant are the connections between one person's planets and the other person's Ascendant, Descendant (the relationship axis), or house rulers. The house overlays — where one person's planets fall in the other person's chart — also tell a rich story: if your Venus falls in your partner's seventh house (the house of partnership), you quite literally inhabit their partnership zone.
Beyond aspects, astrologers also look at composite charts — a chart calculated from the midpoints between two people's planets, representing the relationship as its own entity.
Can Synastry Work for Friendships and Business Partnerships?
Absolutely. Synastry is not limited to romantic relationships. The same methodology applies to any significant relationship — a friendship, a business partnership, a parent-child dynamic, a sibling relationship. The patterns that emerge will reflect the nature of that particular bond.
In fact, many people find that synastry readings with a business partner, close friend, or family member are some of the most illuminating — because these relationships often carry dynamics that are harder to see clearly precisely because they're so close.
What Can Synastry Tell You — and What Can't It?
Synastry is remarkably accurate at describing the quality of a connection and its likely dynamics. What it cannot do is predict whether a relationship will last, or whether two people 'should' be together. Those decisions belong to the people involved.
Some of the most lasting and meaningful relationships have challenging synastry — because challenge creates growth. Some of the most harmonious charts belong to relationships that have run their course. Synastry describes the terrain; you decide how to walk it.
What a good reading gives you is clarity: understanding of why you feel the way you do, what the real sources of conflict are, and what this particular relationship is here to teach you.
