An honest look at what works and what doesn't

The lunar haircut calendar is one of the most searched topics in astrology. We break down whether it actually makes sense — and how lunar rhythm really works.

Every month millions of people search for 'lunar haircut calendar'. How well-founded is it — and is there a rational kernel in this practice?

What astrology says

The classic astrological recommendation: cut hair on the waxing Moon (from new moon to full moon) for faster growth. On the waning Moon — slower growth, if you want to keep length longer. Avoid haircuts on void-of-course Moon days and when the Moon is in Pisces, as water signs are considered less suitable.

Best days by Moon sign: Leo (thickness and shine), Taurus (hair strength), Sagittarius (growth). Less suitable: Pisces, Virgo.

What science says

There are no scientific studies confirming that the lunar cycle affects hair growth. Hair follicles have no mechanism that would respond to the Moon's phase. The rate of hair growth is determined by hormones, nutrition, genetics and health.

That said: many hairdressers note that clients who cut their hair 'by the lunar calendar' come in more regularly and pay closer attention to their hair overall. The simple act of attention to rhythm already affects the result.

How to use lunar rhythm sensibly

The lunar calendar is useful not as an instruction to 'cut on exactly this day', but as a structure for regular care. If you tie your haircut to the new moon — you're cutting once a month, which is already good for hair health.

The real value of lunar rhythm lies in conscious attention to time: when you begin, when you finish, when you maintain. This applies not just to hair, but to anything that requires regularity.
